Writing the first chapter of a novel? Murder mystery?

I think it's good!. Just fix the passage to only be past tense or present tense because it kind of mingles. So, I'd pick past if I were you.... And once you've adjusted things then go ahead and start telling about just exactly what happened that previous mysterious night! :)
