My 2yr old isn't talking like I think he should be.....?

He just turned 2 in January, he does say somethings like hello, hi, bye, poopoo, eww, thank you, welcome, spongebob, frosty, bite, banana, cheese..... few more things. But he doesn't put words together and just kinda acts like he doesn't want to say things more than he doesn't know how. @ his 2 yr check up they said they want him to see a speech person so we have an appt for that, but I just don't think somethings wrong with him. I think he just wants to talk when HE wants to talk. Does anyone else have a 2yr old that doesn't want to talk or does maybe he really have a speech issue.? My dad didn't talk till he was 3, he didn't have problems, he just didn't want to talk. His parents didn't make him, they gave him what he wanted. and I find myself doing the same thing, so could be why he's not talking yet? He points, I give. I don't know. I'm just confused and could just use some insight or something like someone having the same issue.
