To Guys- How can you tell if a girl is wearing foundation (makeup)?

Just curious. I wear foundation, but I kinda have to. The skin on my face is SO much darker than my pale neck and chest that I have to even it out. Ok, maybe I go a little overboard sometimes, but at least when I have it on, I don't look streakey or orange. Usually if I'm asked, I just get asked by guys if I'm wearing makeup or if my skin is real (idk how to answer that but usually I tell them that I am indeed wearing makeup). But today, this d*ckhead was like "you wear too much foundation ****, it's horrible". And he always calls me a "pale ****" it's really annoying considering that I think he's much lighter skinned than I am. So guys, how can you tell if a girl is wearing makeup? Oh and I don't wear any other makeup besides mascara. I hate eyeliner, blush, lip gloss and all of that. Sometimes I'll wear eyeshadow but only on special occasions. Do guys prefer this? Because I mean, like, I've seen so many other girls who seriously wear WAY too much makeup...like today I was in the bathroom in the morning at school putting shamrocks on my face and I saw a girl come in (maybe a junior, I'm a freshman) and she was overly tanned, frosty pink lip gloss, purple eyeshadow with thick black liner and overly blushed cheeks...
