Who were the "A & W" in A&W Root Beer?

I will always remember getting that frosty mug of root beer with a little ice floating in it on a hot summer day at one of the drive-ins. I even remember when my dad drove to one of the original places in the San Joaquin valley...There were carhops back then... Anybody remembe those days?
